Kelly and Mormon Row

A visit to the Tetons wouldn’t be complete without a quick drive to Kelly and Mormon Row. Kelly is a small community between Moose Junction and Jackson. It has a deli with seasonal and highly variable hours, be sure to give them a call if headed out there specifically for them. If it’s open I’d highly recommend it, large sandwiches, draft beer, espresso drinks, and some of the best Teton views in the valley from their deck. They are located right next to the post office in Kelly. Driving from Jackson to Kelly along the Gros Ventre river affords good opportunities for viewing Moose in the fall and spring. Continuing north from Kelly and taking a left to continue on Antelope Flats road, will take you to Mormon Row. This is a collection of historic buildings that remain from efforts to settle the area in the early 1900s. The T.A. Moulton barn is one of the more iconic structures in the area and is often photographed with the Tetons distinctly in the background. There are several other This area can be popular so expect crowds during peak season. Continuing from there will put you back on Hwy 191 just north of Moose Junction.

Wildlife Spotting

While wildlife is abundant throughout Grand Teton and the surrounding area, knowing where to look and when is important and there is never a guarantee you’ll find what you’re looking for, however, following these basic guides lines will ensure you have safe and enjoyable wildlife spotting tour. First and Foremost, never park obstructing the road. While the park roads are speed reduced to 45mph, most other highways in the area at 55mph. The best option is to use a designated parking pullout. If that isn’t available or practical, ensure that your vehicle is completely out of the traveled lane and that your lights are on. Never stop in a travelled lane to view or photograph wildlife. While this may seem obvious, every year, uncountable dangerous situations are created by overeager photographers. When viewing wildlife, be sure to maintain a safe distance and be aware of the animals movements, if they are trending towards you, remove yourself from the area. Return to your car and move to a new, safe viewing location. In particular, Bison and Elk can be in large groups near the road. While these animals may seem docile, they can be unpredictable, move very quickly, and are incredibly powerful. They are not to be trifled with.

A good location for viewing Elk, Bison, and Pronghorn Antelope in the summer is just south of Moran Junction. A large open area that historically was part of the Elk Flats Ranch provides excellent opportunities to see these animals. A parking area is located on the west side of the road and the shoulders are generally wide enough to pull off the road if this parking area is full. Please note the highway is 55mph and is heavily trafficked. Use extreme caution if parking on the side of the road. In the winter this area is also commonly occupied by buffalo.

Oxbow bend is a popular spot to view wildlife, and watch the sunrise or sunset. Located between Moran junction and Jackson lake junction, this area has a large parking area. From here it is common to see a variety of birds, elk, and the occasional river otter or beaver. While these two places often consistently have wildlife, always be on the look out no matter where you are.

Visiting Jackson

A trip to the Tetons wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Jackson. During peak times Jackson can be crowded and a bit overwhelming, if you are just travelling through either coming or going from the area, expect traffic during traditional peak rush hour times, particularly if travelling to Wilson or Teton Valley. Jackson has a variety of shops showcasing local art, photography, craftsmanship along with also of the “t shirt” shops you would expect from a resort town. Be sure to check out Made and Crazy Horse Jeweller. Both are just off the Town square and right around the corner from Cowboy Coffee (we’d recommend the mudslide smoothie with a shot of espresso). Restaurants are abundant and our favourites include Cafe Genevieve for a great breakfast or lunch or it’s next door neighbour Persephone. Both are located just east of the town square on Broadway Ave. Stillwest Is located across from Phil Baum park at the base of Snow King mountain and offers a variety of in house microbrews and rotating local guest taps along with a small but well executed menu for lunch and dinner. Cutty’s located on the corner of Wyoming 22 and US 89 is a good choice for a causal bar and restaurant. They are know for their cheesesteaks and also make a good pizza.

The Jackson Hole Playhouse is another great option for those looking for indoor activities. They often feature well known regional theatre actors and always have a lively show in a small space with live music. Your just see the show or combine it with a dinner option complete with “singing servers” that are also featured in the show. If you are looking for something relaxing, Astoria hot springs south of Jackson could be just the ticket. Natural mineral hot springs are directed into man made pools on the banks of the Snake river. Please check their website as reservations may be required.
