Dog-Friendly Areas

Dogs are not allowed on trails within National Parks and Grand Teton is no exception. For those looking to get out with their pets, lands managed by the Forest Service are often the best option. There are many trails and forest service roads accessed from Togwotee Pass, the area around Brooks lake is one best.

Brooks Lake is accessed via FS road 515 from Togwotee pass. The road is maintained gravel and should be passable to all vehicles, although large vehicles and those with trailers are advised against it. There is a private guest ranch at Brooks Lake, but just before that, there is ample parking at the lake. This is a popular place for boaters and fishing and also includes a campground. On the west side of the lake you will find a trail head that leads out to a series of lakes and alpine meadows. The approximately 5 mile hike to Upper and lower Jade Lakes does have a some elevation gain, but the walk out is more than worth it. You will be treated to deep and clear alpine lakes with rock faces towering above you. Those looking for a more mild hike could follow the valley out to Upper Brooks Lake. This still provides beautiful mountain vistas but is almost entirely in the open so remember to pack your sunscreen.

In east Jackson, the Cache creek area managed by the forest service is another popular place to take your pets. There are a variety of trails, expect some elevation gain. There is a great mix of wooded and open trails and this area is open year round and has trails for mountain bike riding in the summer and cross country skiing in the winter.
